Meet Sneha of Party Pretty Design

By Jenn Kampmeier
President of Kampmeier

Do you have a celebration coming up?  You want it to be exceptionally special, but you just don’t have the time to invest in all the planning, coordination, and endless decorations that go into a fabulous party.  Look no further, Party Pretty Design has you covered.

Sneha, an audiologist by trade, decided to follow her dream as a business owner and launched Party Pretty Design in January of 2011.  Like many entrepreneurs Sneha found that she wasn’t unsatisfied with her Audiology career, but felt that it wasn’t her “calling.” When asked about why she started her business Sneha said “I have a passion for creativity, design and craft.  I love to see what my hands create from what my mind has dreamt up.  I really take pride in styling my events through my very own creativity from start to finish.  To be able to take these skills and share them with others via such special events in their lives gives me indescribable joy.  I love to help others and make people’s lives easier…what better way than through a party!”

Sounds like we can kick up our heels and leave all the hard work to Sneha – “Absolutely Yes”  is the answer.  That’s what I like to hear. “Party Pretty Design offers anything within the small-scale party/event design element.  I can style and design an entire event, or I can custom design any element within the party. I offer a la carte design such as table scapes, favor packaging, welcome signs, and centerpieces.  From birthday parties of all ages, wedding showers, baby showers, dinner parties, Party Pretty Design is your answer to custom party design.” Inspiration comes easy for Sneha, she got it from her parents.  “The work ethic and skills my parents instilled in me through that business resonates with me as I go out on this venture.  With most things that your parents make you do as child, I disliked it at the time, but as an adult, parent, and business owner, I value it more than anything.  Thanks Mom and Dad.”

Do your children get involved with your business?  “Absolutely!” “Even at the young ages of 5 and 3, I already involve my kids in my business whenever possible, and in particular, when they ask if they can help. I really think that responsibility plays a strong role in self-worth and self –confidence, and those are qualities that get you far in life.”

What are the goals for Party Pretty Design? “Honestly, I want to be able to take the stress of out of hosting events for people while at the same time creating an unforgettable party style.  The biggest feedback I have gotten from clients is that they actually enjoyed their event, whether it be their child’s birthday, a baby shower, or bridal shower.  To not have the stress of coming up with all the elements of the party and to pretty much just provide the food, truly it allows my clients to kick back and enjoy their time with guests.  To know that I can make even one person’s life easier brings me tremendous joy.  I truly cater to my clients’ style and desires.  I am in this for them.  Lives are too busy and too short to not enjoy milestones in life.” Any advice for a new business owner?  “Do one thing great as opposed to a lot of things good.” I’m going to steal that one.

Hello World Clothing Company

Contributed by Jenn Kampmeier, Kampmeier Enterprises

Have you ever had to change a diaper at three o’clock in the morning?  You have one eye open, your baby is fussing, and you’re trying to snap the bottom of the pj’s.  Frustrated and cursing under your breath you think; there has to be a better way!  Enter Hello World Clothing Company.

“Hello World® is the brain child of a loving family who wanted an easier way for savvy parents to connect with the needs of their children and with their own world. We realize that busy parents and children have one important common thread: each other. When your child shines the eyes of innocence in your direction, everything else is insignificant.”

“The first product was the SmartZip Sleeper.  It comes in blue “Blue Me Away” and pink “Made Me Blush”  Both have brown accents.  The sleeper has a two-way zipper that allows you to unzip from the top for traditional dressing, and it has an additional zipper pull at the bottom, so you can unzip from the bottom, where access is needed most during a diaper change.  No more little arms wiggling out at the top when you want to change a diaper at the bottom!”

“Our second product was the SimpleZip Pant.  This pant has a one way zipper at the inseam.  This allows for one simple zip when changing the diaper.  I loved the snap pants, but didn’t enjoy realigning them.  And there weren’t very many on the market.  I also would get frustrated when I would be in a public restroom, if I had to take pants completely off.  They would inevitably fall on the dirty floor.  I wanted to simplify a sometimes very stressful situation for all caregivers.”

“We also unveiled a new green color unisex sleeper “Olive You More”.  Our sizes range from 0-24m.”

Where were these gems when I was changing diapers? Not only do they make great products, they understand part of being in business is giving back to the community.   “Hello World Clothing Company has a giving back foundation that donates 5% proceeds of online sales to The Aidan Brown Foundation, a local charity that raises money to provide iPads to children in the hospital with cancer, in honor of Aidan Brown, who fought Neuroblastoma and won! We donate sleepers and 5% proceeds to The New Life Home Orphanage in Kenya through the Amani Foundation.  This was inspired by a local girl in my daughter’s school and her family that  created the Amani Foundation to help support the orphanage where they adopted their daughter.”

“We are currently working with a tube fed children’s organization.  It turns out our sleepers are a great answer for tube fed babies.  The two-way zipper allows for an opening anywhere along the body.  The parents typically cut holes in clothes or use gowns.  Our sleepers keep their babies warm and comfortable while keeping the tube in place.  I get letters all the time from parents wanting bigger sizes and more colors.  Our hope is to run a yearly holiday campaign to provide one sleeper to the foundation for every one sold on our site. ”

Hello World made their first sale in June of 2009, they continue to grow and learn new things daily.  Thoughts on being a business owner, what does it take?  “Money!  It takes money to start and keep going, but sales take time to catch up to that initial investment.  I believe if you do your research, continuously ask questions and give it your all, you will succeed.  In the end the business may fail, but at least I took a risk, had fun and learned a lot about myself.  I also have more enthusiasm and less trepidation about launching new ideas.”

That’s good, because we love those zippers!

Meet Hannah, owner of Hannah Hilliard Photography

Hannah Hilliard

Hannah Hilliard Photography (HHP) is an on-location and studio photography company based out of Fishers, Indiana that primarily services Hamilton County residents.  Most clients consist of newborns, kids, families and high school seniors.

Hanah, why did you decide to start your own business?

The main reason I decided to start my own business was because I knew I had what it took to succeed.  I believe in myself, am proud and confident of my skills and my ability to see the big picture.  Sounds silly but it’s sort of ingrained in people and we are wired differently.  My industry is a little different than others as I’m not reinventing the wheel, but providing my own style of art in photography and exemplary customer service.

So, what do you like most about owning your own business?

Photography is powerful.  I love capturing emotion both in the photo sessions and then when delivering the product.  Capturing memories is so important and I love being part of that.

What has  surprised you most about owning your own business?

There is a lot of paperwork involved to maintain a business and also start your business.  I didn’t realize I’d be spending as much time doing clerical work as I do.

As a business owner, what keeps you up at night?

I guess this answer is due to the fact that I still consider myself a stay at home mom.  Editing keeps me up at night!  I typically edit once the kids go to bed and am up until around 2am.  I like to edit a full session at one time and it’s easiest when I’m not chasing two little kids around.  I think I’d worry more about the business side if I didn’t have such a supportive husband who encourages me and believes in me.

What one characteristic do you think successful entrepreneurs must have?

Confidence!  It’s not easy to step out on your own.  At the beginning, you lose the comfort and security of a consistent paycheck but have to remain confident in yourself and why you decided to step out on your own.  If you don’t believe in yourself then no one else will.

Tell us a little know fact about you.

I’m obsessed with antique shopping and addicted to photo props.  Everything I see can be used somehow and someway.  My husband just rolls his eyes and smirks when I come home from antique shopping with a vintage tricycle, old buggy and some milk crates in my car.

Meet J. Michelle Sybesma, Professional Skills Consulting, Inc.

Tell us about your business Michelle.

My business name is Professional Skills Consulting, Inc. and my services center around tangible initiatives that transfer skills to make businesses run leaner, more efficiently, more organized, and more productive.  It is about bridging the skills that gap education to the private sector.  These are among the things we consider “Professional Skills”:

Complex Information Analysis, Company Culture, Presentation Skills, Making Optimal Use of Software, Workplace Organization, Decision Making, Time Management, Verbal and Written Communication, Multi-generational Effectiveness in the Workplace, Developing Management Skills, and that’s just a sampling! All of my material is uniquely tailored to the needs of each client. Nothing is canned or re-used, and this makes it surprisingly more cost-effective.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

I’ve always worked for myself in some capacity. I’m an entrepreneur at heart. Twelve years ago, when my daughter was small, I realized there was a market for my services. I was working with my husband’s company, which was being acquired by two different companies.  As we were preparing the office for acquisition, I was taking a lot of calls from clients with various needs, and it occurred to me there was a market for skills training that wasn’t being met. I decided I could more effectively manage my time and transition into workforce intensity as my daughter grew.

What do you like most about owning your own business?

That I’m constantly challenged by new projects and new problems to solve, and that I meet new people every day.

What has been your greatest surprise about business ownership?

The sheer volume and respectability of the clients I work with, that after 12 years I still have this much momentum, and that every day is still as exciting as the last.

As a business owner, what keeps you up at night?

Nothing! I’m exhausted; I’m a business owner, after all.

Seriously, I am intensely protective of my client’s privacy. Most of my training and consulting is based around their needs. So, sometimes it can be hard to protect them while still telling the world what exactly Professional Skills Consulting, Inc. does.

What one characteristic do you think successful entrepreneurs must have? Why?

Adaptability. There will always be changes in both market and mindsets, and because of those changes, the more adaptable you are, the most successful you will be.

Tell us a little-known fact about you.

Dating back all the way to high school, I had two passions: art and business, and I was a not a very good artist. Having chosen to pursue business, I realized that my passion for art was more a passion for finding ways to inspire people— and that exists in business too. In my art classes, I began to see the difference between artistic execution and marketing. Marketing is not something they really deeply address in high school, but I began to understand that the reason I wanted to be in art class was to help inspire people. Now I realize that combining right- and left-brain thinking is what allows people to use their skills most effectively.

Meet Jeremy Zucker, Owner of ZBC

Tell us about your business Jeremy.

Zucker Business Communications (ZBC) is a content creation company based in Zionsville. ZBC writes the content for businesses that don’t have the capacity to meet demand. I help businesses with their written materials in a variety of formats – Words Matter.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

I decided to forge my own job path. Writing had been the constant throughout my career, so it made sense. And with an MBA, I was uniquely prepared to use my writing experiences to help business owners.

What do you like most about owning your own business?

I say this a lot: I work more hours now than ever, but they’re my hours. Ironically, I have the flexibility to spend more time with my family and pursue the things I love.

What has been your greatest surprise about business ownership?

The support from other small business owners. Launching a business isn’t easy, so it’s been great to meet so many people in similar situations who want to see you succeed.

As a business owner, what keeps you up at night?

Just keeping the train rolling.

What one characteristic do you think successful entrepreneurs must have? Why?

Short memory. You don’t have time to dwell on what didn’t work; learn from it, push forward, and continue to build.

Jeremy, tell us a little know fact about you.

LifeAction Coaching, Inc.

by Jenn Kampmeier

Lynn Zettler always felt that she had more to offer the world than what she  was offering in her corporate job.  “Having gravitated to personal and professional development programs throughout my career, it became crystal clear to me when I read an article about professional coaching that I could contribute more by helping others through coaching.”  She launched LifeAction Coaching in 2006 while she was still employed and provided coaching for her clients in the evenings.  In 2010 she decided to take the leap into business ownership and has never looked back.

“LifeAction Coaching, Inc. is a full service coaching firm which offers team building workshops, professional and personal development workshops, assessments and coaching for business teams and individuals, and one to one coaching for executives, small business owners and professionals. LifeAction Coaching also offers a specialized coaching curriculum for patent professionals and managers which includes IP portfolio strategy development for their business.”

When asked about her involvement in the community, Zettler certainly keeps herself very busy, and very involved. “I am currently the President of a coaching non-profit called A Hand Up Coaching, which provides coaching to women who are enhancing their lives and increasing their standards but don’t have the resources to pay for coaching. We have an army of volunteer coaches and we match them with deserving women who come to us from our affiliates, such as Dress for Success or PreVail.  I am also currently working with a group of Eritrean refugees (Eritrea is a small country located just south of Ethiopia, www.freeeritrea.org) who live in Nora and are acclimating to our American culture. I am coaching one of them as he initiates a professional cleaning business, which will provide jobs for refugees as they enter the Indianapolis area. I am also the new chair of the membership committee for the National Association of Women Business Owners here in Indianapolis and President of Infoconnection2, a mastermind networking group.  I also volunteer in the Carmel school system to present a module on inventions and patents for 5th graders.”

This is the first business that Zettler has ever owned; I asked her what she thought about leaving corporate America, and being on the other side.  “It has been an eye opening experience after leaving the perceived security and constancy of a corporate job. It has been invigorating and challenging all at once.  It’s amazing to me how many business owners there are who are out there ‘making it’ on a day to day basis. They have an energy and spunk like no other and I learn so much from them in my networking and coaching encounters.”

What has been the greatest challenge for Zettler?  “My biggest challenge came very quickly in learning what activities were worthwhile and which activities were not. When you are first starting out you feel like you need to do everything or you will miss an opportunity. However, very quickly you see that you could fill your whole day with networking meetings and not have any time left to actually do any paid work! One way to do that is to get very clear about defining your perfect client and mission critical activities. You have to make some choices and you need to learn to say no to a lot of things. It’s a real learning process.”

As a coach, any advice for someone wanting to start their own business?  “First, get very clear on your customers and mission critical activities. If you are a new business owner who is still wearing all of the hats, don’t be afraid to get creative with your delegation or outsourcing. Would it really cost you that much to have a virtual assistant, bookkeeper or publicist who will free up time for you to focus more on sales? Many times we focus more on the cost than on the benefit, and in reality, the benefit brings exponentially more value.”
